What is it?

Stress, whether it is the ordinary day to day stress, or the chronic or acute stress from past trauma, can significantly impair our ability to choose appropriate behaviors that best serve us.

Our stress response (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn) is hard wired in our brains, and it is essential to our survival. When we are healthy and balanced (regulated) this autonomic response is activated in the face of threats that are present.

When our nervous system is activated, it causes a physiological domino response:

Cortisol (stress hormone) floods your brain triggering other systems in the body to activate or de-activate.

Your heart rate will speed up or slow down depending on if you fly/fight or freeze/fawn.

Your executive functioning diminishes.

Blood flows to your extremities to facilitate running or fighting.

Your digestive systems slow or stop.

In other words, your body will respond the same way to a potential fatal bear attack, as to an almost fender bender, or when you choose to leave a relationship, or if your boss says “we need to talk”. And in normal healthy circumstances, when the “threat” is gone, your brain and body would regulate itself back into a balanced state. When we are dis-regulated this response occurs exactly the same, but there is no regulation after the threat is gone. The mind and body stay activated. This activation manifests as:
  • Hyper vigilance
  • Rumination and/or obsessive and intrusive thoughts
  • Pessimism
  • Persistent Sense of Overwhelm
  • Restless Sleep
  • Fatigue and Exhaustion
  • and many more

What we will do

Understanding our brains and bodies specifically around trauma, holding/storing/moving stagnant energy, the stress response, and how we can use our breath to connect and ground into our bodies.

Building and establishing rituals and practices that can be used every day to cultivate peace and joy, heal trauma, and make self-love and appreciation a regular occurrence.
